A receipt is not an invoice
An invoice asks for money. A receipt confirms the money arrived. Issuing both matters because they answer different questions: the invoice is what the customer owes, the receipt is what they have settled.
For cash and PayNow payments in particular, a receipt is often the only record the customer has, and it is the document they will ask you for at year end.
What to record on the payment method line
Be specific. "Paid by PayNow, reference 2412XXXX" is worth far more six months later than "paid". If the payment was partial, say so and state the balance outstanding, otherwise a receipt can be read as settling the whole account.
Questions
Is a receipt the same as a tax invoice in Singapore?
No. A GST-registered business must issue a tax invoice showing the GST charged. A receipt confirms payment was made. Some businesses combine the two, but a plain receipt is not a substitute for a tax invoice.
Do I need to issue receipts?
There is no blanket legal requirement to issue a receipt for every payment, but you must keep records of your business income, and customers routinely ask for one. Issuing receipts is simply good practice.
Can I use this for a deposit or part payment?
Yes. List the amount actually received and note in the payment method block that it is a deposit or part payment, along with the balance outstanding.
