The statutory scale

An employee covered by the Employment Act earns 7 days of paid annual leave in their first year of service, and one additional day for each further year, up to a maximum of 14 days from the eighth year onward.

Entitlement begins after three months of service. Many Singapore employers offer more than the statutory minimum, which is why the calculator lets you enter a contractual figure instead — but a contract can never provide less than the Act requires.

Pro-rating a part year

For an incomplete year, MOM's method is completed months divided by twelve, multiplied by the annual entitlement. The rounding rule is specific: a fraction of a day below one half is rounded down, and one half or more is rounded up to a full day.

This matters most at resignation, when final leave encashment is calculated. Rounding the wrong way on a final payslip is a small amount of money and a large amount of goodwill.
